| A Message from Pastor
Dear Friends in Christ,
What we will notice the most this month is the influx of college students as they make their way back to campus. With classes starting on the 21st, many students will be joining us again for worship beginning on the 20th. Our regular Wednesday night schedule with the students starts up on the 23rd. This is the heart of our mission at College Hill. From its inception, College Hill has been a campus ministry, reaching out to the students who make Cedar Falls their home during their college years. In the coming months, we are going to be focusing more on what our role is at CHLC in fulfilling the Great Commission that Jesus gave to His Church before ascending into heaven. St. Luke records these words of Jesus spoken before He ascended: “you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8b, NIV). In studying this verse, one is quick to notice that carrying out the commission that Jesus gave the Church—and each congregation— begins in one’s own backyard. The disciples were in Jerusalem when the Pentecost event took place. They considered Jerusalem their home as they were faithful Jews who made regular appearances at the Temple. As we look in our “own backyard,” we find a college campus filled with students, faculty and staff with whom we can share the gospel. Often, the first step to sharing the gospel with people is to make them feel welcome, or as St. Paul encouraged the Romans, “practice hospitality” (12:13b). Ask yourself, in the past school year, with how many college students did you strike up a conversation? How many college students do you know by name? How many are able to greet you by name because you went out of your way to make yourself known to them? I strongly encourage you as this new school year begins to make a special effort to meet and actually get to know the college students in our midst. This is a crucial time in the lives of young people. The college years may make or break them in their relationship with the Lord and His Church. Instead of talking to the people you already know on a Sunday morning, take a step outside of the box— outside of your comfort zone, if need be—and make the new group of students feel welcome among us. When sitting down for a potluck or an after church coffee, make room at your table for a group of students to sit and join you. Or, better yet, seek them out and sit with them and make them feel a part of our fellowship. Ministry to the students is not just a responsibility of the students. It is the responsibility of each of us. They are people away from their homes, people in need of support, people loved and cherished by Christ just as much as the people closest to you. This month, as the students return, let us join together in making it a priority to welcome them to campus, to welcome them to College Hill, to welcome them to the fellowship of faith that we share. In Christ,

Parents are invited to join in on Saturday, August 5th when we take a trip to the Bremer County Fair in Waverly. Plan to join us for a great time at SonHarvest County Fair! The Volunteer Sign-up Sheets are due into the church office or with the plate offering by Sunday, June 12. A meeting for all VBS volunteers will be held in mid-June. Watch the bulletin for more details.
Help Wanted to Fill Welcome Bags We want to make the incoming students feel welcome as they come to UNI. What better way to welcome them than to greet them with a bag filled with goodies and gifts from people who care— US?!?! If you would like to help out in this effort, you may either supply some goodies—homemade or store bought—or funds to purchase some welcome items. There will be a collection spot in the northwest corner of the church kitchen to put the goodies you would like to provide. Or, you may offer some funds by putting it in a special envelope designated as such and putting in the offering plate or bringing it to the church office. Please have any donations to the church by Tuesday, August 15. For ideas of what might be good to provide for these welcome bags, speak with any of the students or recent grads who are around. They will be glad to let you know what might be useful and welcome to the students.
Adopt a Student Looking to get to know one of the students better this fall? Then sign up for the adopt a student program. You will be matched up with one of the students to see how his/her semester is going, pray for him/her, and anything else you consider. If interested please let Tim Gamble know. Call him at 230-1140 or e-mail him at amlman@mchsi.com. There will be more information down on the bulletin board in the Brammer Center in the next couple of weeks.

Planning is in Progress Pastor Ogilvie has initiated a strategic planning process for the ministry at College Hill Lutheran Church and Brammer Student Center. What this process does is examine the values that drive our ministry and utilize them along with the mission we share to set the vision and strategy for our ministry for years to come. This will be a process that takes months to complete. Joining Pastor in this endeavor are the members of the Planning Leadership Team (PLT): Nick Anderson, Jill Bollinger, Brad Brons, Keith Macomber, Doris Mauer, Becky McBurney, Eric & Stephanie Schumacher and Denise Tjarks. In the coming months, they will be spending hours in meeting and discussing their work. Your input will be invaluable to them and the planning process, so please feel free to talk with them about the plans being put forth. In return, the PLT will keep you updated as to the progress that is taking place. Please keep this process before the Lord in your prayers. In all things, we want to be faithful in carrying out the ministry He has given us to carry out in this place.
| Meals on Wheels
The week of August 28—September 1 is the last week this year that we help deliver Meals on Wheels. We need two volunteers each day. If you are available from 10:45 a.m. to about 12 noon and are willing to help, please call Miriam at 266- 3234 and tell her which day. |

After Church Fellowship The After Church Fellowship Committee is adopting a new format with the start of the new academic year. Host families will be obtained on a volunteer basis and will be reduced from three families to two families per Sunday. A sign-up sheet will be circulated in the upcoming days to fill the calendar for first quarter of the school year. The main advantage of this change is to allow members to select hosting dates that match their personal calendar. Please continue to support this important part of our ministry by volunteering! Thank you, Kevin DeVries, Board of Lay Ministry
| Lutheran Youth Fellowship High School Youth Group News August is upon us! August will start with high school youth helping with Vacation Bible School. The week will conclude on Saturday with a fun morning spent at the Bremer County Fair in Waverly. Small group study continues on Sunday mornings with Kristina McBurney leading a study on a book called MEAN Girls – facing your beauty turned beast by Hayley DiMarco. This small group will continue to meet on Wednesday nights this fall at 7:00 p.m. starting August 30. The fall Kick-off Camp-out is planned for Friday, August 18 or 25. Watch the bulletin for the final date. This will be held at the McBurney’s. We will also be providing child care for congregational members wishing to attend the workshop being held at church Saturday, August 26 in the afternoon. Summer fun! On June 28 three chaperones and seven youth enjoyed a fun day at Adventureland. We thank God for beautiful weather and a safe journey there and back. Special thanks to Dan Coulthard for driving the van for us and to Paula for helping chaperone. On July 1 Becky and Katelyn McBurney and Anna Adolph and Naomi Msengi headed to Ames to volunteer at the first ever USA National Special Olympics. The first day we checked into the dorm we stayed at, received our shirts, ID tags and fanny packs, and then proceeded to Hilton Coliseum for training to help at the opening ceremony that evening. We were part of a red human arrow, which meant we were part of a team of 15 that wore red shirts and helped guide athletes to where they were suppose to sit. The opening ceremony was quite an event and to be part of it was a great experience . On Monday Naomi and Anna proceeded to the Aquatics area to assist in escorting athletes and helping them carry their things. Katelyn and Becky spent a hot day out in the sun as bus stop hosts at the track and field/gymnastics area. All in all we learned a lot about this great group of athletes and the Special Olympics organization, not to mention meeting lots of nice people. We were thanked many times for giving our time to volunteer at this event. It was definitely a worthwhile experience. |

The first meeting of the Strategic Planning Team will be held on Monday, June 26 at 7:00 p.m. and will continue to meet on a monthly basis. A planning meeting for the presentation on the Priesthood of All Believers & the Office of the Holy Ministry will be held and a date set to present it to the congregation. Pastor will be taking vacation August 9-16. Board of Lay Ministry has been informed of this and Sunday service will be covered by Rev. Donald Poock. Emilie Kohl and Darin Alwardt have joined the Board of Evangelism under director Tim Tjarks. The Board of Education is working on Vacation Bible School as well as curriculum for the fall Sunday school classes, which will resume the Sunday after Labor Day, September 10, 2006. LYF continue to meet on Sunday mornings for small group study. Board of Lay Ministry reported progress is being made in retooling the ACF and meals. A volunteer list has been generated for the summer months with a new list going out in August. Cookies are on hand in the freezer for those who choose to use them for ACF. Meal chairpersons have been obtained and menu suggestions are being generated. A short orientation session will be held following a Sunday worship to get people familiar with what is expected when serving a meal and submitting their expenses. For Board of Campus Ministry Tim Gamble reported that summer orientation has started as well as summer Bible study on Sunday nights at 7:00 p.m. at the Brammer Student Center. A poster will be started in the next month so that it will be ready when school starts. The Board of Church Properties was happy to report progress on the east door replacement project. The door was to be shipped shortly and will be painted before it is installed. A second-hand table and four chairs, a floor lamp, and corner TV stand has been purchased for the student room. Next project on the list is the garage; new doors and siding. Two bids have been received for this project but the Board has decided to look for other contractors and additional bids. Four volunteers have been recruited to help determine the best use of the funds for the Arline Davids memorial. They are Madeline Bruce, Miriam Krallman, Nellie Peterman, and Ann Rueber. Under Old Business Kevin gave us an overview of the preliminary budget. A motion to submit the proposed budget to district for subsidy request, subject to review in November/December, 2006 was passed. Under New Business a discussion was held regarding a synopsis of the Board meeting minutes being placed in the monthly newsletter to keep the congregation better informed. It was agreed to start having Becky summarize the minutes and give them to Sylvia for the newsletter. Another item discussed was voting membership. In our constitution it states that voting members who have not been at a Voter’s Assembly meeting in 12 months will be dropped as a voting member. It was decided that Kevin and Pastor will draft a letter to send to the members this applies to reminding them of their status. Reminders will also be placed in the bulletin and/or newsletter. Under Comments and Concerns Doris reported that $120 from CHLC members has been raised toward the Thrivent house for Habitat for Humanity. Bob Bolte has been over working on it a number of hours. Due to a generous donation of windows by someone in the area, the percentage needed to contribute from area churches has been met.
Sunday School Needs for 2006-2007 Our congregation has needs in staffing the Sunday School for 2006-2007. September 10th will be Rally Day, the first Sunday of the new school year. When those classes begin the following staff members are needed:
That’s seven people that are needed to operate an effective Sunday School Plans are to provide training for the teachers at the beginning of the quarter’s lessons. This fall quarter all students will be studying “Genesis”. Won’t YOU prayerfully consider volunteering for one of the seven roles? All congregation members need to pray for a successful Sunday School staffed by devoted, committed teachers. If you are willing to teach or would like more information contact Darci Russell or Doris Mauer. May God bless your consideration of this opportunity for service.
