News for the week of Sunday, February 15, 2009.

News:

The Lutheran Hour is broadcast weekly and may be heard on Sundays on
WGN, Chicago 720AM at 6:00 a.m.; WMT, Cedar Rapids 600AM at 6:30
a.m.; KCHA, Charles City 1580 AM at 7:30 a.m.; KWAY, Waverly 1470AM at
8:00 a.m. and KXEL, Waterloo 1540AM at 9:30 a.m. The Lutheran Hour
message for next Sunday is "Making a Grand...Exit" Guest Speaker: Rev.
Willam P. Yonker. Jesus wants to be known for His entrance-His
miraculous birth-but He wants to be known even more for His death, for
that is where He takes away the sins of the world. (Mark 9:2-4)

We welcome into membership this morning Matt Otis by way of adult
confirmation and his wife Mary by way of transfer from St. John Lutheran
Church, Waverly, IA.

Food, Friends and Fellowship. Stay after worship for the potluck. There is
plenty of food, so come and enjoy yourself.

Today there will be a major Benefit at the Cedar Falls Am Vets for our Alise
Williams. Alise is a three year old baptized member at College Hill. She is
the niece of Ivan and La Dawn Hankins. An auxiliary site for the benefit
will be the Fellowship Hall at CHLC where we will host a potluck and
accept donations to the Williams Benefit. There will be a basket for cash
donations or checks made out to the Williams Benefit and, be advised,
that an additional amount will be included in our donation from the HELP
account. There will be matching funds from the Black Hawk County
Chapter of Thrivent. We are hoping to reach a goal of $1500.00.

Stewardship Thought: 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1: Good stewards are
imitators of Christ who work hard and intentionally to build up other
people and thus bring glory to God. Martin Luther called Christians "little
Christ's"-not in the sense that we are perfect and holy but rather that
we are to reflect Christ's love in our words and actions.

You have two opportunities to worship with us during the midweek Lenten
season starting Wednesday, February 25. Matins will be held at 11:00 a.m.
and Vespers at 7:00 p.m.

Anyone interested in making greeting cards (card stamping) at 6:00 p.m.
on Thursday, February 19. Contact Ruby Wegener at 236-1065.

Woman to Woman can be heard Sundays at 7:00 a.m. on KXEL, Waterloo
1540AM. The message for next Sunday is Leadership That Works. Nancy
Ortberg understands what being an effective leader is all about. Through
engaging storytelling and power principles, she shares how to build a
productive team that unleashes individual potential in her new book,
Unleashing the Power of Rubber Bands.

In Sunday School today: The story "Jesus Heals Jairus's Daughter" served
as the focus of Sunday School today. Just as Jesus by Word and touch
raised the dead girl to life, so by His Word and Sacraments, He kills and
buries death and raises us to eternal life. Questions for discussion include,
"How did Jesus heal this little girl? How does Jesus heal us from the
sickness of sin?"

Building Healthy Families: No special Valentine in your mailbox
yesterday? Perhaps you didn't look in the right place. The world's ALL
TIME BEST messages of love, written just for you by the author of Love
Himself, are waiting for you today: Romans 8:38-39, Psalm 136:2, John
3:16, 1 John 4:7-8, Jude 1:21. Lutheran Family Service of Iowa 800-622-
7285

Outreach Idea Mark 1:40-45: Jesus cleansed a man suffering from a
serious skin disease and asked him not to tell anyone about it. The
healed man could not refrain from telling everyone he met about what
Jesus had done for him. Jesus does not ask us to be quiet in our witness
but rather to speak boldly of what He has done for us and how much He
means to us.

Immanuel Lutheran School and Preschool is hosting a kindergarten and
preschool round-up on Sunday, February 22. Kindergarten Round-up will
be held from 2:00-3:00 PM and Preschool Round-up for three and four
year olds will be from 3:00-4:00 PM. Parents and children are invited.
Come to find out what a Christian education is all about. Financial
assistance is available. We are looking forward to meeting with you.
Barbara Buescher, Principal.

there are looking forward to hosting you and have fun and food planned for
the evening. You will need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, and
towel. The highlight of the weekend will be the guest presenter on Saturday.
He is Rev. Daniel Preus. He will be speaking about American Evangelicalism
and the challenges that Lutheran Churches are facing with this theology. The
cost of the trip is entirely FREE for you. The day will conclude around
3:30 p.m. and we should be able to be back in Cedar Falls by 5:30 p.m.
