News for the week of Sunday, November 30, 2008.
News:
The Lutheran Hour is broadcast weekly and may be heard on Sundays on WGN, Chicago 720AM at 6:00 a.m.; WMT, Cedar Rapids 600AM at 6:30 a.m.; KCHA, Charles City 1580 AM at 7:30 a.m.; KWAY, Waverly 1470AM at 8:00 a.m. and KXEL, Waterloo 1540AM at 9:30 a.m The Lutheran Hour message for next Sunday is "Prince of Peace and Power." Speaker: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus. Many people think Christmas is all about peace on earth and good will, but Christ is the Prince of Peace and of Power. (Mark 1:7) The December Newsletter is available for you to pick up today. It can be found on the table in the gathering area. Be sure to pick up yours, as well as one of someone who isn't here this morning so that you can deliver it to them this week. Advent is a time of preparation. To that end, CHLC is offering additional worship opportunities so you may prepare your heart and mind for the celebration of our Lord's coming. Join us for Vespers on December 3, 10, 17. Stay for fellowship with cookies, coffee and hot chocolate after Vespers. Today in Sunday School: Sunday School students studied the story of David and Jonathan today. Just as David's and Jonathan's brotherly love for each other reflected the love of God within their hearts, so, too, our love for others is the reflection of God's love given to us through Christ. Parents could ask, "How did David and Jonathan demonstrate their love and care for each other? How does God demonstrate His love and care for us?" Poinsettias: The cost this year is $10.00. A signup sheet is located on the table in the gathering area. To pay for poinsettias make checks payable to CHLC marked "Poinsettias" on the memo line on the check. The deadline is tomorrow, Monday, December 1. Building Healthy Families: Someone once said there are three ways to get something done: do it yourself; hire it done; or forbid your kids to do it. Innovation is at the heart of parenting. If what you are doing isn't working (screaming, cajoling, demanding) maybe there is a better way. Find creative ways to engage your children in the tasks that need to be done every day. You (and they) will have more fun and get the job done, too! Lutheran Family Service of Iowa 800-622- 7285. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son' (Isaiah 7:14) . . . there are two promises here separated by nine months! The virgin will first conceive. There is the great miracle of the incarnation, God becoming human. Then she will give birth. There is the great miracle of God being born in an ordinary way so He could live and die for sinful humanity." Rev. Dr. James I. Lamb, executive director of Lutherans For Life.
