News for the week of Sunday, June 29, 2008.
Outreach Idea: Matthew 10:34-42: Jesus teaches some hard sayings in this text, things like people turning against each other and losing their lives. But His gracious promise is that those who follow Him wholeheartedly, regardless of what the world might say, will be given everlasting life. What a good word to share with others who are so caught up with the things of this world that they lose out on those things that last for eternity. Stewardship Thought: Romans 7:1-13: St. Paul reminds us that Christ died for us so that we might also die to sin, and he was raised from the dead so that we might bear fruit for God. Bearing fruit is at the heart and core of Christian stewardship. How we use our God-given time, skills and money is a mark of our stewardship. A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life: "Our Lord faced opposition, but He continued to bring the Word of life and healing to many. Though the pro-life community may suffer reverses... we cannot give up the effort to fight for the unborn so that all humans are recognized as persons, beings valuable in and of themselves." Rev. Dr. Kevin E. Voss, director of fhe Concord/a Bioefh/cs Institute. www.lutheransforlife.org / 888-364-LIFE Meals on Wheels July 7-11 is the second week this year volunteers from CHLC will help deliver Meals on Wheels. Two people are needed each day. Parents, have you heard "I'm bored!" lately? Check out the mobile library next to the children's activity bags. We have a big variety of books and videos to keep your child entertained this summer. We also have a good selection of adult books both at the mobile library and in the library downstairs. Why don't you check these out? Happy reading. Building Healthy Families: Summer activities take on a different pace, but often, it is not a slower one as many hope. Try to include an element of relaxation and calm in vacations and special events. Stroll along a creek bank and think about Jesus' words," Whoever believes in Me, streams of living wafer will flow from within him": survey the expanse of land along the highway as you travel and consider that "As far as fhe easf is from the west, so far has He taken our sins from us"; take in the magnificence of the bright stars in the night summer sky and "Give fhanks fo fhe Lord, who made fhe moon and fhe sfars fo govern fhe nighf - His (ove endures forever!" Lutheran Family Service of Iowa 800-622-7285. College Hill Lutheran Church is linked to Kenya, where missionaries Claude and Rhoda Houge serve. They write, "The group of eight women who served in April on a short-term team for two weeks had a unique situation. Instead of working in just one location, they got to experience many different kinds of ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya in the Nairobi area. This was the first team we had comprised of women from all over the U.S. Their experiences included attending the Lutheran church that was burned in Kibera during the riots, feeding orphans in Kawangware, sharing their faith with Ethiopian refugees in northern Nairobi, encouraging women at a prison, holding babies at a center for abandoned babies, worshipping with the Maasai, seeing animals first hand in a game park, and many other wonderful experiences. They were a real encouragement to all they met, and they touched many hearts." The Lutheran Hour is broadcast weekly and may be heard on Sundays on WGN, Chicago 720AM at 6:00 a.m.; WMT, Cedar Rapids 600AM at 6:30 a.m.; KXEL, Waterloo 1540AM at 7:00 a.m.; KCHA, Charles City 1580 AM at 7:30 a.m.; and KWAY, Waverly 1470AM at 8:00 a.m. The Lutheran Hour message for next Sunday is "Seeing As God Sees" Speaker: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus. Are you worried about how you look to others? The Lutheran Hour message says God is concerned about your looks as well. Listen to this message and see how God sees. (Romans 7:24-25) Woman to Woman: Listen to Sunday's program immediately following "The Lutheran Hour" at 7:30 a.m. on KXEL, Waterloo 1540AM . Next Sunday's message is: Be the Mom. Julie Barnhill, author of "One Tough Mother: It's Time to Step Up and Be the Mom" talks about the NON-negotiables of motherhood, facing your giants, saying "no" like you mean it, and how to love 'em like crazy-all within God's blueprint for mothers!
