News for the week of Sunday, January 13, 2008.

News:

This morning we place in office the CHLC Church Council. This years officers are: Tim Gamble, Board of Campus Ministry; Scott Ackles, Board of Church Properties; Nancy Neessen, Board of Education; Doris Mauer, Board of Evangelism; Kevin DeVries, Board of Lay Ministry; Nick Anderson, Board of Stewardship; Keith Macomber, Member-at-Large: Suzanne Riehl, Financial Secretary and Tim Tjarks, Treasurer. May God bless their service to this ministry in His name.

The Women's Evening Bible study meets at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17. We will study the life of Lydia.

Next Sunday, January 20, is the date for the Welcome Back Potluck. Drinks and table service will be provided by the Women's Bible Class members, hosts for the meal. College Hill family members are asked to bring two dishes to share. Single members are asked to bring one dish.

Outreach Idea: In order to fulfill the Father's loving plan of salvation Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River. The Heavenly Father's voice and the descent of Holy Spirit upon him in the form of a dove gave divine evidence that Jesus is truly God's Son. Afterwards John gave a bold and clear witness of the truth that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. We as God's people rejoice in the truth of our salvation and look for opportunities to share this good news with others who need to hear a word of hope.

Today in Sunday School, we learned more about John the Baptist from Matthew 3:1-12. As John pointed to Jesus as the Lamb of God, so our pastors point us to this same Jesus, who grants us forgiveness, life, and salvation. Ask your children what they learned about John, what he ate and how he dressed.

Building Healthy Families: As many as one in three Americans admit to frequent periods of loneliness. Look around. Who do you know who might be feeling lonely this week? Jesus promises, "I am with you always, to the end of the age." Find time this week to share these words of encouragement and your company with someone who might be feeling lonely. Stewardship Thought: Who are God's modern-day wise stewards? They are people who have been changed by God's grace and joyfully and freely use all they are and have to be people in mission-God's mission!

Life Sunday is recognized on January 20 by Christians around the world as a day to emphasize the importance of life. Black Hawk Lutherans for Life will be observing this day by conducting a Memorial Service for the Victims of Abortion. The Memorial Service will be at 5:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 1555 West Ridgeway Avenue, Waterloo. Please join us at we remember the children who have been aborted, pray for healing the hearts of their parents and for healing of our country that all people may respect life.

Beginning with Luther's Small Catechism, we are making our way through the original German of the Book of Concord. Please join us at 9:30 a.m. if you wish to participate or just sit and listen. Everyone is welcome.

In Depth Study with Pastor: On Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, anyone may join Pr. Wegener for an in depth study of the upcoming readings in the Church Year. This involves looking at and translating the Greek and Hebrew texts. You may add to our discussion of the texts or simply sit with us and listen. You will nof be expected to translate, but you may find it helpful to follow along in the English.

Students meet Pastor Wegener at Maucker Union near Essentials at noon on Thursdays for Table Talk. Pastor will provide the food.

The congregation invites you and your friends to be their guests at the Welcome Back meal next Sunday, January 20, following the morning worship.
