News for the week of Sunday, January 6, 2008.
College Hill Lutheran Church is linked to Kazakhstan, where Morris and Jean Olson serve as missionaries. They write, "Zoiya, who is 66, has been blind since she was less than two years old. She is diligent in reading the Braille Bible, listening to the audio Bible and other Christian materials, and praying. She requested that we obtain replacements for three books of the Bible that have become worn and hard to read. Zoiya regrets that she became a believer late in life and questions how she can serve the Lord now that her health is not good. Our encouragement to her was to call some friends, minister to them, pray with them, and to share her faith with others when opportunities arise. When the Bible materials that she asked for were delivered this week, Zoiya shared with us some wonderful news. Since our last meeting, she had called one of her blind friends and given her a set of Bible tapes. Praise the Lord for Zoiya's courage to call a friend and offer her the set of extra tapes. Praise the Lord that the friend's response to Zoiya's offer was a resounding 'Yes!' When we said goodbye and gave the usual 'ooveedemsa' (We'll see each other soon), Zoiya laughed and responded, 'We'll see each other in heaven!' What a joy it is to see sisters in Christ like Zoiya Ablaze/ for the Lord as they share the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ with those around them." Life Sunday is recognized on January 20 by Christians around the world as a day to emphasize the importance of life. Outreach Idea: The Wise Men saw the star and came to worship the newly-born King of the Jews. God's Ablaze people, by faith, also see the signs of the might and majesty of Jesus, the King of kings, and come to worship him and then invite others to also come and worship Jesus. What a blessed outreach privilege we have! Today in Sunday School: The visit of the Wise Men, as told in Matthew 2, was the Bible story in Sunday School today. This Bible story teaches us that the Savior came into the world for the salvation of all people. Just as the Wise Men came to Bethlehem to see the Savior and honor Him, so we come to church to see the Savior in His Word and Sacraments. With these gifts, He both honors and blesses us. Discuss how in our sin we are like Herod and do not want to worship Jesus. Talk about the details of the story and see how they compare with "tradition." Building Healthy Families: Do you know anyone who has a diagnosis of PCE? Maybe you have it! PCE is a curable but troublesome condition, experienced by many. If you or someone close to you has PCE (Posf Christmas Exhausf/onj consider this prescription from Jesus, our Great Healer: "Come unto Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Spend some time in the Word this week, and rest! Lutheran Family Service of Iowa -800-622-7285 Stewardship Thought: Who are God's modern-day wise stewards? They are the baptized people of God who live lives dedicated to God and use their money, time and other gifts for God's purposes. "The magi knew Jesus was more than a baby-they recognized His star, they traveled hundreds of miles, they presented kingly gifts, but most telling of all, they worshiped Him. The magi recognized Jesus as God. Because Jesus was more than a baby, His life, death, and resurrection have eternal significance. His life, death, and resurrection also have temporal significance. The price He paid to redeem all people gives value to all people. That means every baby is more than a baby ... Every unborn baby is more than a baby! He or she is a person for whom Jesus lived, died, and rose again." Rev. Dr. James I .Lamb, executive director of Lutherans For Life.
