News for the week of Sunday, December 9, 2007.

News:

The Lutheran Hour is broadcast weekly and may be heard on Sundays on WGN, Chicago 720AM at 6:00 a.m.; WMT, Cedar Rapids 600AM at 6:30 a.m.; KXEL, Waterloo 1540AM at 7:00 a.m.; KCHA, Charles City 1580 at 7:30 a.m.; and KWAY, Waverly 1470 a.m. at 8:00 a.m. This next week's sermon is "Being Sure." Speaker: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus. It's human to have questions: it's the Holy Spirit's job to provide answers to our questions. (Matthew 11:2-3)

Christmas Potluck: Today we enjoy fellowship over a potluck meal following worship. Be our guests and stay for this wonderful meal.

HAPPY 80th BIRTHDAY!! Flowers on the altar are given in honor of Flora Brewster's 80th birthday by her family. Flora attended Iowa State Teachers College then, married Marvin here at College Hill Lutheran Church in 1960. A card shower is planned for Flora. Please send any fond memories along with a card to her at 3111 Carlton Drive, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613.

Building Healthy Families: The Bible makes it clear how powerful words are. Children, especially, are vulnerable to the power of words. Ask God to help you this week to use words that build up those around you. "Love builds up," so "Speak the truth in a spirit of love." Lutheran Family Service of Iowa 1-800-622-7285

Outreach Idea: John the Baptist was God's special messenger to point to Jesus and call people to repentance. Today we are God's messengers to proclaim the good news of Jesus so that people may come to know and believe in Jesus so that they may live a new life of repentance and have a hope that leads to life everlasting.

Stewardship Thought: "Ready-Set-Come!" Who are God's watchful and wise stewards? They are people of hope who, while waiting for our Lord's return, live in harmony with one another and practice hospitality and other Christian acts of kindness.

Today in Sunday School, the children heard about Mary's visit to Elizabeth (Luke 1:26-56). In the presence of the Son of God growing within Mary's Womb, John the Baptist leapt inside Elizabeth's womb. God fills us with Himself in Word and Sacrament and we, like Mary, offer our praise and worship. Mary's song, "The Magnificat," is sung by Christians as part of the Matins Liturgy. Talk to your children about this wonderful Bible story and how God fills us with His presence through Word and Sacrament. Review the Second Article of the Apostles' Creed, "born of the virgin Mary."

The Evening Guild and Thursday Evening Bible Study will enjoy an evening of fellowship and fun on Thursday, December 20 at 7:00 p.m. at 3215 Homeway Drive. Please plan to attend. There will be a Christmas devotion and dessert enjoyed in the company of your friends from College Hill. See you there.

The traditional Children's Service will be held on Sunday, December 23, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. Come to hear the Christmas message as shared by the Sunday School students. The service will be followed by a light supper, highlighted by Jesus' Birthday Cake. You won't want to miss it. Put this event on your calendar now. Children don't forget practice this Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

Adopt a Family: Every year the congregation of College Hill adopts a family for Christmas. A Christmas tree has been placed in the fellowship hall and will have ornaments with tags attached to them with a Christmas gift wish. Pick an ornament and purchase the gift listed. Please attach the tag to the package and place it under the Christmas Tree. Non perishable food items, laundry items and paper products will also be gathered in a basket. Your gifts must be delivered to the church no later than next Sunday, December 16. In past years your generosity has been overwhelming and very much appreciated. For more information call Ivan or LaDawn at 236-0391.

The January Newsletter Deadline is this Wednesday, December 12. Please have all information and articles to the church office by noon on Wednesday.
