News for the week of Sunday, November 18, 2007.
ME, A PASTOR? ME, A DEACONESS? If you have found yourself asking this question or have ever considered studying to be a pastor, now is the time to do something about it! Rev. Tom Zimmerman of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana is going to be at College Hill Lutheran Church on Sunday, December 2 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Come and explore the possibility of entering the ministry. Men of all ages are invited, as are their wives, children, or fiancees. Women interested in the deaconess program are also invited, along with their families. Conferences are individual and informal. Reservations are NOT needed. Refocus and Reflect During Advent Our Advent preparations will soon be underway. December 2 is the First Sunday in Advent. We spend three weeks in preparing our hearts and minds to celebrate the coming of the Christ as a baby in Bethlehem. This is an important season for Christians to refocus on our relationship with Christ and reflect on what His coming means for us. Our Midweek Advent Worship will be held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. beginning December 5. Worship will be preceded each week by a fellowship meal served in the Fellowship Hall. The meal is served free of charge. The Lutheran Hour is broadcast weekly and may be heard on Sundays on WGN, Chicago 720AM at 6:00 a.m.; WMT, Cedar Rapids 600AM at 6:30 a.m.; KXEL, Waterloo 1540AM at 7:00 a.m. KCHA, Charles City 1580AM at 7:30 a.m.; and KWAY, Waverly 1470AM at 8:00 a.m. This next week's sermon is "Getting It Together" Guest Speaker: Rev. Ralph Blomenburg No choir practice today or Sunday, November 25. See you on Give Thanks in Worship. Our Thanksgiving Eve worship will be held this Wednesday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. It is right to give thanks to the Lord for the gifts He gives. We give thanks and also receive His blessings through the Word. Canned food items and Christmas presents for the Vinton Lutheran Home are now being collected. Please take your canned goods to the sacristy by Wednesday, November 21. The gifts may be put in the boxes under the table in the gathering area until Sunday, December 2. Poinsettias: It's time again to order flowers for the Christmas season. The cost this year is $10.00. A signup sheet is located on the bulletin board in the gathering area. To pay for poinsettias make checks payable to CHLC marked "Poinsettias" on the memo line on the check. The deadline is Friday, November 30. THANK YOU - LYF thanks everyone who donated candy, stocking stutters, or money to purchase items for our Stocking Project. We were able to fill almost 40 stockings and send them on their way to Metro Ministries in New York. What a great way to share our blessings with others. Zone 2 LLL Rally: Grace Lutheran Church, 1024 W. 8th St., Waterloo. December 1, registration at 9:00 a.m., meeting at 9:30, light lunch at noon. District LLL President Keith Schmidt will present programs on Kazakhstan and "Parenting Families: From ME to WE," the new outreach program for the church. Also at this meeting, Zone 2 must elect a new president and a new vice-president. Please consider one of these roles for yourself and /or your neighbor, and express your interest to Ron Stahlberg at 352-4790. Building Healthy Families: "Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence." (Erma Bombeck) Between cooking, eating, napping and watching football, don't forget to spend time reading, playing and praying with your children over the Thanksgiving holiday! Lutheran Family Service of Iowa 1-800-622-7285 Stewardship Thought: The Epistle reading for today reminds us of the truth that if anyone will not work, he shall not eat. We live out our stewardship responsibly and in so doing make use of our time and resources in a way that helps our neighbor and brings praise and glory to God. Sunday School News: Manna, water, and quail (Exodus 16-17) was the Sunday School lesson for today. Just as God provided manna, water, and quail for the hungry and complaining Israelites to preserve them, in Christ, God feeds us with the manna of His Word and the water of forgiveness, satisfying our eternal hunger and quenching our eternal thirst. Talk to your children about how sin causes us to be lost and hungry and thirsty for what we cannot have. Speak of Jesus, the bread of life and the living water, and how He satisfies our spiritual hunger and thirst. Review together the Fourth Petition of the Lord's Prayer. LSF News:
