News for the week of Sunday, September 16, 2007.

News:

The Lutheran Hour is broadcast weekly and may be heard on Sundays on WGN, Chicago 720AM at 6:00 a.m.; WMT, Cedar Rapids 600AM at 6:30 a.m.; KXEL, Waterloo 1540AM at 7:00 a.m.; KCHA, Charles City 1580 at 7:30 a.m.; and KWAY, Waverly 1470 a.m. at 8:00 a.m. This next week's sermon is "Make an Angel Happy." Speaker: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus. What does it take to make an angel joyful? (Luke 16:15)

Sunday School News: For the next few weeks in Sunday School, the children will be learning the wonderful, true, story of Joseph. It began today with the account of jealous brothers selling Joseph into slavery. (Genesis 37) Though the brothers didn't know it, God would use their treachery to bring about His plan to deliver His people and ultimately to deliver us from sin and death through Jesus. A family discussion might focus on how hatred and unkind thoughts are sins that can lead us to hateful words and actions, as they did for Joseph's brothers. Your children may identify with the brothers and also with Joseph. Help them to see that though we suffer from our own hateful acts as well as the unkindness of others, on the cross, Jesus saved us from the hurt and harm of our own sins and the sins of others.

Building Healthy Families: Having faith and being a Christian doesn't mean we will never make mistakes. It means that through our mistakes, we experience God's grace, mercy and forgiveness which are ours in Christ. Because we have received mercy, we can grant it to others when they hurt us. You will make mistakes - so will the people you love. Forgive yourself - forgive them. Lutheran Family Service of Iowa 1-800-622-7285

Stewardship Thought: We undeserving sinners are made God's stewards by the marvelous working of the Holy Spirit through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We continue to be changed by the Holy Spirit as St. Paul was, and as a result we live and work in ways that honor God, support His kingdom and make life better for others. That's good stewardship!

The flowers in the back of church this morning are given to the glory of God in memory of Bob Gutknecht's father John Gutknecht whose funeral was this last week.

Calling all women. This Thursday is the beginning of the new year for our Women's Evening Bible Study. Join us at 7:00 p.m. to take a look at "The Samaritan Woman: Finding the Water of Life" and what we can learn from her. Take time in your busy schedule to study the Bible and refresh yourself.

Volunteers are needed to help with the Thrivent Dinner. On Saturday, September 29, workers will be needed in the kitchen to do preliminary cooking and baking.  Workers will be needed in the fellowship hall to set up for the meeting.  On Sunday, September 30, many workers will be needed to do lots of tasks, from early set up, serving, and cleanup. Just as the workers set up the fellowship hall, it will need to be returned to usual placement. There will be plenty of work for many helpers. Please reserve time on your schedule to assist. Why not volunteer so you don't have to be contacted? Keith and Carolyn Macomber are chairing the event and will appreciate the help.

Outreach Idea: St. Paul used himself as an example of a sinner deserving of death, but a sinner who was rescued by the grace of God. That was good news for Paul, and he acknowledged that he was richly blessed so he might serve as a witness and example to others who also deserved God's wrath and punishment. We, like St. Paul, have also been blessed with the gift of saving faith so that we might be witnesses and examples to others.

Game night this week. Students from the Cultural and Intensive English Program (CIEP) at UNI are coming to the Brammer Center this Friday, September 21 to spend an evening playing board games and enjoying our game room. This is a grand opportunity to assist a student with his/her English and provide cultural experiences, and for you to gain cultural information from the student about his/her homeland. They invite you to join them at 7:00 p.m. for an evening of games and fun.

The annual Thrivent dinner will be held at College Hill Lutheran Church on September 30 at 1:00 p.m. Thrivent is a supporter of CHLC and the LSF. They give us matching funds for the Spring Break Servant Event. This is a good time to show how much we appreciate them. We are looking for people to help serve the food but will take any help that you are willing to offer (set up, prepare food, serve the food and clean up). We are looking for as many people as we can get. If you are interested, please let Pastor Wegener or Tim Gamble know.

Movie Night: Next Sunday, September 23 we will meet at the parking lot of the church at 6 p.m. and drive to Grundy Center for a movie night.  The start time for the movie will be either 7 or 7:30 p.m.
