We thank Rev. Jerome Terry and his wife, Dora, for being with us today. Pastor Terry is the minister at Bethel Lutheran Church in the New Orleans area. This was the church LSF went to help while on their spring break trip this last year. He is our guest preacher this morning. Following worship there will be a potluck honoring Pastor Terry. Please stay and enjoy the meal with us.

Pastor Terry will also be speaking at UNI on Monday at 7:00 p.m. in Ballroom B at Maucker Union. Invite your friends to join you Monday.

If you would like to assist Pastor Terry with his work in Louisiana there is a basket on the round table for freewill donations. Each dollar will be matched dollar for dollar up to $900 by the Black Hawk County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Thank you for your help.

The October Newsletter Deadline is this Wednesday, September 12. Please have all information and articles to the church office by noon on Thursday.

Today our Sunday School students studied about Jacob and his family from Genesis 29:1-30:24. The children learned that through Jacob's family God brought forth the Savior, Jesus Christ, who endured lies, deception, and the schemes of sinful humankind to work our salvation on the cross. Families can discuss how we sin when we lie or deceive others and how such actions show that we don't trust God to provide and care for us. Ask your children if they have ever suffered because of someone's lies? Talk about how Jesus suffered and died for us on the cross. Talk about the first commandment and how it relates to this Bible story.

Esau forgives Jacob (Genesis 31:3; 32-33) was also taught today in Sunday School. This exciting account teaches us how Jacob struggled against man and God for his birthright. The children learned that Jesus struggled against sin and death to win our heavenly birthright. Talk to your children about sin and how it breaks families and relationships. Discuss how sin severed our relationship with God, how through Jesus we are restored to God eternally, and how Jesus helps us as God's children to restore our broken human relationships.

Outreach Idea: Onesimus was a runaway slave and under Roman law could have been put to death. St. Paul pleaded with his owner, Philemon, to receive him back as a brother because he had become a Christian and was of far more value than before. By nature we are also runaways from God and thus by our own doing guilty of death. But Christ died for us so that we might be forgiven sinners who can now share the good news of this great freedom in Christ.

Building Healthy Families: Disasters happen without warning. By making a family disaster plan, you can be prepared for the unexpected. Find out about the disaster plans at your workplace, your children's school or day care center, and other places where your family spends time. Involve all members of your family to create your own Family Disaster Plan using helpful planning tools available through the Red Cross at www.redcross.org. Explore The Disaster Area designed to be fun and interactive learning about disaster preparedness for kids at www.fema.gov/kids/dizarea. Lutheran Family Service of Iowa 1-800-622-7285

Stewardship Thought: Good stewardship encourages us to make the best use of our resources regardless of our station or position in life. Onesimus was a runaway slave who became a Christian by God's grace and, as St. Paul said, was of even more value to his master Philemon as a Christian brother than as an ordinary slave. By God's grace we are richly blessed so we may be blessings to others.

volleyball league will be playing again this year on Mondays at St.
Stephen the Witness Catholic Student Center located next to
University Book and Supply. Our first game is 6:00 p.m. this Monday,

is more about fun and fellowship-although we won't complain if we
win a few games, as well. If you are interested in playing, or even just
cheering the team on, come on over to St. Stephen's. If you can't play
every week, that is fine. Join us when you are able.

Wednesday evening LSF Bible Study and Social Hour at 8:00 p.m. in the
Brammer Center located on the lower level.

Students meet Pastor Wegener at Maucker Union near Essentials at
noon on Thursdays for Table Talk.

Mark your calendar. Students from the Cultural and Intensive English
Program (CIEP) at UNI are coming to the Brammer Center on Friday,
September 21 to spend an evening playing board games and
enjoying our game room. This is a grand opportunity to assist a student
with his/her English and provide cultural experiences, and for you to
gain cultural information from the student about his/her homeland.
They invite you to join them at 7:00 p.m. for an evening of games and
fun.
