News for the week of Sunday, January 24, 2010.
News:
This morning we place in office the CHLC Church Council. This years officers are: Tim Gamble, Board of Campus Ministry; Jim Boileau, Board of Church Properties; Penni Lilleskov, Board of Education; Doris Mauer, Board of Evangelism; Ervin Dennis, Board of Lay Ministry; Marcia Stirler, Board of Stewardship; Keith Macomber, Member-at- Large: Suzanne Riehl, Financial Secretary and Douglas Lilleskov, Treasurer. May God bless their service to this ministry in His name. Pastor Wegener cell phone number is 319-427-3098. In our prayers today- Alise Williams, Sylvia Nordbrock, Rev. Don Poock, Mike Batt, Lucinda Peters and Hershel Vaughn (Keith Macomber's brother-in-law). Lutheran Hour Ministries Sunday: Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) proclaims the Gospel around the world and equips congregations to share Jesus with others. On February 7, join us for LHM Sunday to learn about their ministry. For information about LHM, visit www.lhm.org. Outreach: Luke 4:16-30: Jesus called sinners to repentance and faith in Him as God's only Savior. However, those who heard him at Nazareth rejected His offer of hope and salvation. Likewise, not all people with whom we share our faith will accept the message of salvation in Jesus, but that should not stop us from continuing to share. Sharing the good news is our work and changing hearts is the Holy Spirit's work. Building Healthy Families: Someone once said there are three ways to get something done: do it yourself; hire it done; or forbid your kids to do it. Innovation is at the heart of parenting. If what you are doing isn't working (screaming, cajoling, demanding) maybe there is a better way. Find creative ways to engage your children in the tasks that need to be done every day. You (and they) will have more fun and get the job done, too! Lutheran Family Service of Iowa 800-622- 7285 Stewardship Thought: 1 Corinthians 12:12-31: In this reading Paul reminded the Corinthians that they were at their best when they pooled their gifts and resources as God's stewards. One of our Biblical Stewardship Principles states that we are uniquely singular, yet profoundly plural, which means that our lives are not solo performances, but are personal responses to God, lived out within the community of faith to benefit the whole world. College Hill is linked to the Dominican Republic, where Rev. Walter and Ana Ries serve. They write, "On Nov. 13, we held a special outdoor service in one of the slums in the capital. One of our members had finished building her house and asked us to bless her home. One of her daughters introduced me to a neighbor who is raising her three grandchildren alone. The mother recently died of cancer at the age of 32. We have gone there several times to have devotions with her and she asked if we could baptize her three grandchildren. After receiving classes on Baptism, she also invited her other family members and grandchildren to be baptized as well. One of the young men travelled 300 kilometeres for his Baptism! In all, five were baptized on a Friday evening with around 40 people attending the service. Neighbors also peered in from their balconies and porches overlooking our service on the dirt road that turns into a foot path into the slums. Two light bulbs were rigged up to our little hand held generator and we invited our members in the capital to participate in the service too. This week, we hope to begin our first Sunday school there with the newly baptized children and make follow-up visits. Please pray for us in this, the newest of our preaching stations." Life Quote: "God has brought so many broken and hurting to us in ways we can't even comprehend. We continue to proclaim Christ's healing, and serve the needs of women and men who have experienced the loss of a child through an abortion. We know that God is in control, we also know that He uses people to do His work." Grace Kern, director of Word of Hope (888-217-8679) This "Life Quote" is from Lutherans For Life - www.lutheransforlife.org.
