Stewardship Thought. We do not worship saints, but we are encouraged by their examples to be humble servants of God.  As humble servants we desire and do that which is pleasing to God and good for our neighbors.  As we use all our gifts--including time, talent and treasure--for God’s purposes we are the kind of stewards God has motivated us to be.

Thank you to everyone who purchased butter braids from LYF. We raised approximately $130 which will go toward our youth trip next summer.

PRAYER OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE WEEK OF November 5, 2006

Please take this home with you and put it where you will be reminded daily of the prayer opportunities for our church. This week they are:

ð     Give thanks to the Lord for the light and life He brings to our dark world.

ð     Pray the Lord would use you to shine His light to the people around you.

ð     Pray in thanksgiving for the work of the LWML and for the Lord’s continued blessing upon their work.

ð     Pray the Lord’s blessing upon the planning for the upcoming pastoral vacancy, that His work faithfully continues in this place.

ð     Pray the Lord’s blessing upon the work of Bessie Fick as she works with international students at Iowa State University.

ð     Pray at all times with every kind of spiritual prayer keeping alert and persistent as you pray for all Christ’s men and women.-  (Ephesians 6:18)

The Planning Leadership Team Seeks Your Input. They are beginning work on defining the mission of CHLC/BSC in a mission statement. They would like input from congregation members and students as to what you view the mission of our ministry together is. Please take some time this morning to visit with one of the team members (Jill Bollinger, Nick Anderson, Denise Tjarks, Keith Macomber, Doris Mauer, Stephanie and Eric Schumacher) and share your views on this important aspect of our life together.

November Newsletters are available for you to pick up today. They can be found on the table in the gathering area. Be sure to pick up yours, as well as one of someone who isn’t here this morning so that you can deliver it to them this week.

Don’t miss the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Sunday, November 19. Turkey, dressing, potatoes and drink will be furnished. College Hill congregation families are asked to bring two dishes to share. Single members are asked to bring one dish. College students will be our guests. See you there!

Outreach Idea. The saints of God throughout the ages are like the people Jesus calls ‘blessed’ in Matthew 5.  They are people who become more and more like their beloved Savior and give freely of themselves to make life sweeter for others.  We are privileged to follow their lead and bring joy and hope to others around us.

Camera operator needed! The Black Hawk Chapter of Lutherans For Life is looking for a camera operator for their show "God Loves Life." Interested volunteers would need to go to a 2 hour camera/producers training and film for 2 hours on a bi-monthly basis. Please contact Kie Maas, 231-5711, or Nathan Schutt, 433-0513, if interested.

Helpful Gift Idea? Looking for a Christmas gift for Lutheran family and friends? Violinist and music arranger, Trent Thompson (4th year Concordia Seminary student) has music CDs that may be your answer. The CDs are for a suggested donation of $20. You can listen to the music and obtain them at www.alaythiamusic.com  or call (951) 925-7625.

Building Healthy Families:  How does your family recognize or celebrate Veteran’s Day (November 11)? If you typically haven’t done anything, how about making this the year to start? Take a few moments to sit down with your child and explain why we celebrate Veteran’s Day (for a brush up on the history of the celebration and information designed for children, check out the VA’s web pages http://www1.va.gov/opa/vetsday   and www.va.gov/kids ). Think of all the members of your family, congregation or neighborhood who have served in the defense of our freedom and tell them ‘thank you for your service’. This will be good for the veterans . . . and good for your kids. Lutheran Family Service of Iowa 1-800-622-7285

Go BEYOND with LSF. Join your friends for Bible study this Wednesday as we dig into God’s Word, going beyond the basics, beyond every day life, beyond the ordinary with our extraordinary God. Bible study begins at 8:00 p.m. in the lower level of the Brammer Center.

The Thanksgiving Potluck is only two weeks away! Join us for this annual event, complete with turkey, dressing and all the trimmings. The meal will follow worship on November 19. Invite your friends to join your for worship and dinner.

Get away from the old dining center routine and join LSF for our monthly brunch next Sunday! It will be held in the Brammer Student Center after worship. Come join your friends at LSF and enjoy some fellowship and tasty food!

In Sunday School Today: Have you made any sacrifices lately? How do they compare with the sacrifice God asked Abraham to make (Genesis 21:1-7; 22:1-19)? How do they compare with the sacrifice God made to save us from sin’s punishment? By God’s grace, Abraham didn’t have to make his sacrifice, but God did. He sacrificed His own Son so that we could have salvation (Hebrews 9:11-12). As you Grow in Christ during your devotion time this week, think about the story of Abraham and Isaac that our children studied in Sunday School this week. Then compare this sacrifice with God-s sacrifice, thanking God for the salvation He has given.
