WELCOME Welcome in the Name of our Blessed Lord! College Hill Lutheran Church (CHLC) is a member of the Iowa District East of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. CHLC provides for the faithful proclamation of Christ crucified for sinners (even college students!) and the administration of the sacraments according to Christ's institution for the forgiveness of sins. We invite you to join us for the Divine Service on Sundays at 10 a.m. and any of the other services that we offer. If you are visiting with us for the first time, please introduce yourself to Pastor Wegener before or after the service. Our facilities are for your use. The greeters and ushers will be ready to assist you in any way possible. THE DIVINE SERVICE The ancient liturgy of the church is rightly called "Divine Service" because it is primarily God's service to us. God gives and we receive (Mk10:45; Lk 10:38-42). In the Divine Service God distributes the forgiveness and life that Jesus purchased with His blood on the cross through the means of grace: His Word and Sacraments (Rm 10:17; Mk 16:16; Mt 26:28). We gather together as sinners in need of forgiveness and our Triune God faithfully delivers that forgiveness to us through the Gospel in the preaching of His word and the Lord's Supper (Acts 2:42). In the Divine Service, the music, hymnody, and chanting serve as vehicles for the life-giving Word of God. DAILY CHAPEL Matins is prayed at 9 a.m. every morning Monday through Friday and usually lasts about 30 minutes. Matins is the church's morning prayer which includes praying the Psalms, reading of Scripture, a hymn, a meditation, and additional prayers. Anyone is welcome to come any time. WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY Every Wednesday students are invited to a Bible Study at 8:00 p.m. Prior to Bible study, students may join the congregation for Vespers at 7 p.m. and enjoy socializing at Halfy Hour with beverages and snacks at 7:30 p.m. (choir practice will also be at 7:30 in the nave). You may come for the whole evening or just part of it. THURSDAY TABLE TALK Every Thursday students are invited to meet with other students and Pastor at Maucker Union for lunch. Pastor will bring the food. We look forward to seeing you! GUESTS AT THE LORD'S SUPPER Guests who desire to receive the Lord's Supper kindly are asked to speak to the pastor prior to the Divine Service. What Jesus puts into our mouths in this sacrament is not just bread and wine but also His own body and blood for our forgiveness. Our practice of the Lord's Supper seeks to care for Christ's people, Christ's Supper, and Christ's teachings.
The Bible teaches us that receiving the Lord's Supper together implies that we share the same beliefs, so we ask that those who wish to receive Communion with this congregation first learn what we believe. This practice also helps to ensure that the Lord's Supper is received to the spiritual benefit of each person, since 1 Cor. 11 teaches that even Christians can receive Communion to their harm. During the distribution, please join in singing the hymns, meditate on God's Word, and pray that the Lord will heal our divisions and unite all Christians in His pure Word.
